AAMP on the Go Workshops
A traveling museum program promoting cultural awareness through arts in education.
The African American Museum brings history and culture to you. We deliver cultural programs at community organizations and within the school environment for children of all ages. Our programs offer participants an opportunity to interact with visual and performing artists, express their ideas through lively discussions and participation, and gain cultural literacy as well as important communication and critical thinking skills. These programs are offered Tuesday through Friday at AAMP facilities or off-site locations by reservation only.
- African Dance – Enjoy an interactive cultural performance while learning the history of traditional African dance in respective countries.
- Hip-Hop Jazz Musicology – Explore the social and historical influences of African American musical traditions in an interactive journey through time.
- Historical Re-enactments – History comes alive with interactive dramatic presentations of African American men and women who shaped the nation from the Colonial period to the Civil Rights Movement.
- Mlanjeni Magical Theatre – Introduce your little ones to the traditional African theatre style called Mungamano – an interactive performance that includes storytelling, folk music, conjuring, puppets and masks. The audience sings, dances, chants and chats with characters throughout the performance.
- Storytelling & Folktales – Learn about the art of traditional African American storytelling from a modern griot (storyteller).
- Educator Workshops – Our professional development workshops use exhibitions on display as a resource for developing interdisciplinary arts based and history lessons, and encouraging cultural literacy through object-based learning. Designed for docents, parents and teachers in core curricula areas, (including the arts, English language arts, social studies, the humanities and math), the workshops focus on creative methods for using and integrating art and history in the classroom.
