AAMP Celebrates Africa Event

THE AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM IN PHILADELPHIA CELEBRATES THE CULTURE AND TRADITIONS OF SENEGAL

In celebration of the African nation of Senegal’s 50th year of independence, The African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP) in collaboration with The Senegalese Community of Philadelphia (SCP) honored the rich cultural heritage of Senegal during the annual Celebrate Africa African Art and Cultural Festival.  Each year a different country from the continent of Africa is honored with a day-long celebration that features a colorful display of its history and culture.

On Friday evening, July 30th a special reception and ceremony was held at the Museum from where selected individuals or groups are honored for their positive contributions to the socio-economic development of the honored country.  This honorees includeed: Serigne Magueye Gueye, a Professor and Doctor of Urology who is also the current President of the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC), an institution which has worked to bring awareness about cancer and hope for the people suffering from it; Amadou Diagne, a Medical Scientist who has worked diligently to raise HIV/AIDS awareness among highly affected minority and immigrant communities and to educate patients, healthcare providers, policymakers and community leaders; and His Excellency Cheikn Niang, the current Consul General of the Republic of Senegal.

Special invited guest speakers included:

  • Romona Riscoe-Benson, President and CEO - African American Museum of Philadelphia
  • Hon. Stanley L.  Straughter, Chairman, Major Commission on African Caribbean Affairs
  • Hon. Jannie L. Blackwell, Councilwoman - 3rd District Council, Philadelphia, PA
  • Hon. Curtis Jones Jr.Councilman - 4th District Council, Philadelphia, PA
  • Her Excellency Fatou Danielle Diagne, Ambassador of the Republic of Senegal to the United States
  • Serigne Mamadou Bousso Leye, Minister of Culture of the Republic of Senegal

The celebration continued on Saturday, July 31st with a full day of activities for the entire family.
