Each day the African American Museum in Philadelphia brings powerful history for impactful living to the Delaware Valley region.   Please consider seizing the opportunity to introduce the region to a day or a week of important and exciting American history with our Sponsor a Day program.  A day at AAMP exposes visitors to cultural legacies of the African Diaspora told through intriguing facts, interactive exhibits, amazing stories, delightful music, and theatrical productions. We at AAMP believe that understanding history and culture empowers individuals to fulfill their potential and contribute to the larger society.

Revenues from general admissions simply cannot cover the cost of all enrichment programs. Sponsorship opportunities include:

Family Fun Days

This cultural gumbo of interpretive history features storytelling, arts & craft, music, dance, and theatrical productions reflecting the African Diaspora for children from noon – 4 p.m. each Saturday. Colonial storytelling rotates with dance, hip hop jazz musicology, and drum circle workshops. The program is free with the general admission fee.

CinemaSepia

CinemaSepia is a Sunday afternoon series of rare vintage films from the AAMP vault and classic African American movies for adults and/or families to enjoy from 1 p.m. to approximately 3 p.m. weekly. The program is free with the general admission fee.

School Days at AAMP

School Days at AAMP offer student groups guided tours of museum exhibits in four galleries. Two galleries of Audacious Freedom: African Americans in Philadelphia 1776 – 1876 is where students walk through our founding history and come face-to-face with rarely told stories of change agents as well as a day-in-the-life activity wall. And, 381 Days: The Montgomery Bus Boycott Story presents the daily marginalization encountered on the front lines of systematic Jim Crow and the extraordinary emergence of deferred rights. Between those galleries, students are treated to the latest rotating exhibit. Groups receive discounted youth rates. Help a group from the Delaware Valley experience the wonders first hand.

Trailblazers to Freedom Traveling Trunk Days

 Trailblazers to Freedom Traveling Trunk Days enables middle and comprehensive school students to discover the Audacious Freedom defined by two African Americans in Philadelphia from 1776 – 1876 and a century of American milestones. Exploration takes place in the convenience of school classrooms or auditoriums for 1 to 2 weeks. Four exciting lesson plans are backed by video narrative with touch-screen guided support, primary source materials, hands-on activities, and replicated artifacts from our select era. The trunk program is designed to meet all state and local educational standards. You can sponsor the trunk at area schools followed by the full guided tour at AAMP.

The trunk received state approval for the educational improvement tax credit. The Education Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) of the Department of Pennsylvania allows businesses to reduce their state tax liability – equal to 75% of their contribution to the African American Museum in Philadelphia for one year or 90% for a two-year commitment. Sponsor eligibility is determined by the state on a first come, first serve basis.

Passport To Culture: Summer Youth Empowerment Program

(Ages 6 – 12) Beginning Tuesday July 6, 2010 through Friday August 20, 2010

Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Designed to enhance the exhibitions “Audacious Freedom” and “381 Days: The Montgomery Bus Boycott Story,” the museum offer tours and a diverse, engaging menu of our Learning through the Arts Workshops, including African and Colonial Dance, Mlanjeni Magical Theater, and Arts and Crafts, along with a journey to historic moments in the rich cultural history of the people of Africa and the Diaspora through Storytelling & Folktales.  These programs offer young people the opportunity to meet prominent visual and performing artists from Philadelphia’s cultural community, while exploring pivotal moments in American and world history.

Our Learning through the Arts programs and workshops, held at AAMP or through our AAMP on the Go! Traveling Museum Program, offer participants an opportunity to interact with visual and performing artists, express their ideas through lively discussions and participation, and gain cultural literacy as well as important communication and critical thinking skills.

FREEDOM WALK: Historic Philadelphia ~ 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This moving and thought-provoking walking tour led by Richard White, brings to light little known facts and places regarding the Free African Movement, and the 3 pillars for a true/representative democracy (human independence, moral persuasion and economic self-sufficiency).  The guided journey will begin at AAMP and conclude at Mother Bethel.  Stops in between include the house where Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, The President's House (the first White House where nine enslaved Africans lived and were kept by George Washington), Congo Square, site of the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas, Willing's Alley (St. Joseph's Church and Benezet Free African School) and the home of James Forten.

Upcoming Events and Exhibits
  • Special Programming for Voices African American and Latina Women Share Their Stories of Success exhibit. Fifty stories and 50 chances to be inspired by extraordinary African American and Latino women of Pennsylvania. Related programs are in development for delivery later this year.
  • Free to Be: The Artistry and Impact of African American Ex-Patriots on Turn of the Century Paris. The Museum will join a citywide celebration of Paris, 1910-1920 and offer a film revue, premiere the specially created “Free to Be” exhibit, and panel discussions with scholars. Delivery in 2011.
  • PeaceQuilts – Patience to Raise the Sun. Artistic delight in the form of quilts crafted by women from rural Haiti. The compelling stories of the quilters, and the historical and cultural setting of these works in the Caribbean tropics are intended to inspire viewers. AAMP plans to premiere this intriguing quilt exhibit. Delivery in 2011.
