Demond Melancon: As Any Means Are Necessary

On View: March 22 - July 27, 2025

As Any Means Are Necessary - Demond Melancon (b. 1978) works solely with a needle and thread to sew glass beads onto canvas. He began this practice in 1992 when he first became part of a more than 200-year-old culture known as the Black Masking Culture of New Orleans.

Pearl Bailey was an award-winning actor, singer, songwriter, and author. Whether she was performing on Broadway, opening for Duke Ellington, captivating audiences in Philadelphia nightclubs, or starring in her own daytime television show, Pearl Bailey’s passion and talent made her a beloved entertainer worldwide. Objects from the Bailey-Bellson Collection, including scrapbooks, archival photographs, and letters from friends and admirers worldwide, will be on display.

Shaheed Rucker: (re)Covering the Iconic

​On View: December 20, 2024 - July 27, 2025

Designer and Artist Rucker reactivates the classic design of Jet magazine covers, adorning them with prominent figures throughout Pennsylvania’s history. From Cecil B. Moore and August Wilson to Patti LaBelle and D.J. Jazzy Jeff, these covers visualize the diverse cultural landscape of Black Pennsylvanian achievement while underscoring the intergenerational importance of these unique contributions as nothing less than iconic.

“Shaheed Rucker: (re)Covering the Iconic” will open on December 20, 2024, in the Jack T. Franklin Gallery at the African American Museum in Philadelphia.  Learn More...
